If you are using it as a running line, it should comply with Class C of BS EN 795:1997 "Protection against falls from a height —Anchor devices —Requirements and testing" If you are using in as a lanyard extension, then BS EN 354: 2002 "Personal protective equipment against falls from a height — Lanyards" The actual strength required depends on the foreseeable imposed load; which varies with a number of factors including: number of persons hooked on at a time, type of fall, distance between supports etc. Often easier to leave the design and spec to a specialist company.

Following on from edwardh posting, running lines should only be designed and erected by competent installers who can prove that the installation complies with EN 795 and have had a representative running line certified as suitable by a UKAS approved test house. If you cannot avoid working at height (the safest option) you need to select the next best option, work restraint then work position followed by fall arrest. Prediction programs have been developed to calculate fall forces from which you can deduct end anchor, intermediate loadings and therefore the wire rope size which should meet the requirements of BS MA 29: 1982 and certificated as such.
