Fellow construction professionals, I am gathering some data for compliance to shedule 2 of CDM 07. The work itself is for refurbishement projects (approx 250) scatterd around an area of lets say a 15-20mile radius (approx), these are small projects with not alot of man hours on each property (unless parts dont fit etc.) and it is notifiable but ... the P.C is to provide welfare facilities (duty) how do you or have you given adequote facilities to these operators when each property is so far apart? What used to happen is operators used to use toilet facilities in garages cafes etc...but is that old fashioned now or as pacticable and resonable as it gets considering the circumstances? Your views or experience will most most appritiated.

Steve, whilst schedule 2 is quite explicit, one can only do what is 'reasonably practical'. I suggest discussing the matter with the Client and CDMC is your first step, they both have a vested interest in the matter. Hopefully, some common sense will prevail. Ray

Hi There is some guidance from the HSE on the matter - transient sites and welfare. During social housing refurbishments over a large Estate we provided welfare facilities at a central point. This could be considered for your project in different zones possibly. I agree with Ray speak to the CDMC, they should of considered this with the client early on in the tender process.

The nature of the work will also have a bearing on what would be considered "reasonable", as would the overall timescale. All things considered, a centrally located welfare facility (mobile or otherwise) could well be considered reasonable. For heavy, dusty or wet work, use of existing "local" facilities would not be acceptable, and from personal experience, the HSE would not accept this approach in any circumstances from a hygience perspective. Some of the better contractors now have hot water washing facilities within their vehicles.
