I am after a bit of advice/guidance regarding workplace driving restricions placed on people with Type 1 diabetes.

I know that the DVLA must be informed when a person is diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes and that restrictions are likely to be placed on diabetics driving minibuses and passenger carrying vehicles, although they are likely to be allowed to drive their own private vehicle.

What about restrictions on driving other vehicles, eg tractor, ATV, rollers etc used for grounds/estate maintenance where the public may have access, (although it's not on a public highway). We are seeking Occ. Health and GP advice, I was just wondering what others may have done in similar situations. Is it a matter purely for risk assessment or are there other legislative restrictions that come into play?

Thanks in advance.

Hi Chas - I think you have answered your own question - risk assessment. The questions you will need to satisfy are:

1) are they newly diagnosed? If so then how well controlled is the diabetes - your OH will probably need a GP/specialist report to ascertain the full extent of the condition and its implications
2) if an existing condition - how well controlled is the condition?
3) what is the impact of the condition on the individual? Some may experience gradual symptoms whilst may have rapid onset (drosiness, change in behaviour etc)
4) what will be the level of supervision - lone working?

The individual will almost certainly be covered by the DDA and as such there will be a requirement to consider reasonable adjustments - only you can decide what these are.

Hope this helps.

Chas, some good stuff there from Paul and I do not a little about T1 suffering from T2 myself. I suggest that you are on the right track with GP and OH but the trick when asking advice of these or doing a referall is to give them as much information as possible so that they can give the most objective opinion. Once you have their advice, this will form the basis for your RA which should, taking into account their advice be relatively straight forward.
