I have sudied hard to become Health and Safety certified, i passed the Nebosh general and then the Nebosh fire cert and i am now enrolling on the Nottingham and trent, but i am still searching high and low for my first position can anyone share their views on what i might be doing wrong?. I have 27 yrs worplace knowledge split between construction and catering and have a wealth of transferable and man management skills,i have a full driving licence,i live in the Wigan area and most of all i have the will to succeed.

Claire appears to be right the job market is not vibrant.
You may wish to google
jobrapido
total
reed recruitment
as these sites collate jobs from several agencies.
I am presuming you look at the specific H&S sites
Shirley Parsons, Attwood Burton, Allen & York
Macdonald and company, Principal People etc.

I was in as similar position to yourelf, looking for jobs for 8months until i have now finally been offered a role, although it doesnt start for another month!! I applied for every h&s job i could via all the agencies, the shp, hse jobs, construction news, shirley parsons, convert, etc i got this role off of the jobsite website, i found more roles on there that require less advisory experience than the others who are looking for more specific experience!

I am also in the same boat, I got advice from a very kind member on here who reviewed my CV and got me to change it, to which I did posted loads of CV's to every agency on the planet I think. I have had about 6 enquiries from 3 agencies who put my name forward for these positions and I have already been knocked back for one and still waiting on feedback for the others. I too studied hard I am waiting to Graduate in November for a BSc and I am still struggling for work.

Jobs are harder to find these days, as there are more health and safety advisors around today, than 5 years ago. More and more peolple are studying in the health and safety field so jobs will be harder to find. There seems to be more jobs abroad than in the UK.

As many posters have posited, it is just the situation at present, when I was first looking, you had to be 27 years old, Diploma qualifed with 35 years experience!It will come, when you least expect it, now I am looking again, as a CMIOSH for an advisory role, all I hear is "you are too senior", why cant I do the interesting stuff anymore, like keeping people safe,and working on site, instead of generating statistics and giving the board a 'rosy glow', I have beeen there, and done that, why can't some of us just be senior OH&S practioners and leave the bean counters alone, to get on with it?

..think its the same for everyone..struggled for work up north so i moved to London...more opportunities..however more people down here with comparable qualifications and experience looking for work...just keep plugging away.....tailor your CV for jobs we cant put all our skills and experience on one cv ..i had 4 interviews with different companies and the the 5th got me employment .....it is hard for everyone it will come right

I'm in Australia so the situation is likely somewhat different here, but the best thing I did was sit down with a recruitment consultant to review & offer critique on my resume and cover letter. She tore it to pieces and made many recommendations as to how to improve it.
Have a good look at your CV and bounce it around to as many people as possible. Ask experienced recruiters & HR professionals if they would mind spending an hour with you to review and critique your resume. Ensure that your resume is "keyword heavy" to make sure that it is actually viewed by a person (many recruitment firms use filtering software to filter out those resumes that do not match their requirements) and just keep hammering away..
Don't be afraid also to apply for those jobs that you do not exactly think you meet the requirements for.. if you think you could have a good crack at it then go for it! the worst they can say is no!
