This is a new one to me, so hope somebody may be able to help!
I work for a housing association and we own a property with a biomass boiler, which is fuelled by wood pellets. The pellets are stored in a hopper and fed into the boiler automatically.
I've now been approached by 2 people (seperately, although I suggest chinese whispers!) to warn me that the pellets, if they become damp, omit carbon monoxide - clearly a bit of a worry if true!
I've done some googling and have found that this is an issue for the bulk storage of wood pellets on container ships (fortunately we're not in that business) but nothing on small scale storage.
I've obviously requested the MSDS from the supplier but until that arrives, and based on my pessismism that it is unlikely to mention CO emmission, does anyone have any thoughts or views on this.
I'd be amazed if it is an issue but you never know - I'm certainly not going to fuel (excuse the pun) the elfinsafety debate by making any pronouncement on this until I have clear evidence that it is a problem.
Thanks

Is this a Syngas biomass process. If so, typical content of syngas includes about 9.5% hydrogen and about 17.5% (175,000ppm !!!) carbon monoxide. LELs for these are 4% and 12.5% and the short term Workplace Exposure Limit for CO is 200ppm. I think a leak of syngas poses a much greater risk than dampening of the pellets in the hopper assuming not stored for significant periods, but this is tried and tested technology with lots of safeguards built in.
In its publication “Guideline for Safe and Eco-friendly Biomass Gasification" (which you can download from the internet), Intelligent Energy Europe recommend that the manufacturers of plant should undertake a risk assessment to improve the plant’s conceptual design e.g. utilising methodologies such as Hazard and Operability Study (HAZOP) and Failure Modes Effects and Criticality Analysis (FMEA).
Regards, Peter
