Do any members have any systems currently in place to impliment a practicable system of hot work permits. With up to 30 Gas Engineers/Plumbers/Heating engineers out in the field at any one time working on day to day maintenance ,i am looking for a system whereas we don't have to have a supervisor sign every job on and off as per the current Regs. The areas of work covered are void properties.and the day to day occupied domestic premises repairs. The client is asking for a PTW for every job, signed on and off by a supervisor. To properly impliment this procedure would involve the recruitment of at least 10 more supervisors. Any suggestions will be a great help Paul B

Hi Paul, The only process I can think of that will speed up your approval / closure of the PTW is via a mobile network and laptop. Using a PTW checklist form that is filled in and completed by the engineer when they get on site, and following a quick once over, and using an automated risk calculator built in so that the end result of filling in the document clarifies that the risk is ALARP, assuming they will follow all of the presribed steps. When they complete the work he/she fills in the post work and closure form again ensuring that there is no residual risk, and the engineer has followed the required series of steps. Does all that make sense to you? It is a system we use when doing remote well work to ensure that when the well is live all of the presribed steps are followed, the risk is ALARP, allowing the engineer to proceed without supervisor counter signatures.

In this case, the client should have their own PTW and provide their own authorisation. In reality, it is necessary to provide a fire watch during and for a significant interval following the hot work. I cannot see this being viable in the domestic situation and in other premises where HSW or SHWAW Acts apply it would be usual for the client to provide the permit and fire watch or for the contractor to cater for this in the price of the job. Dont see the old lap to PTW system being a runner though

Why not have the engineers all be "supervisors" of their own work?
