I have been tasked with designing a new system of fortnightly safety audits to be conducted on various construction sites. The remit is to design a system that would show a percentage of 100. The sites have subcontractors and employed staff and are predominently Mechanical and electrically biased. Numbers vary from 10 to 100 operatives Any help would be greatly appreciated.

i can't come up with a document but i would have thought one possible routes to look at following would be to come up with a list of headings for health and safety and when carrying out a tour list any issues under those headings then look at deducting the score under that one heading. Not sure if the skill set of the people on each site would make that greater difference of then qualifications or level of competence they should have for their job therefore understanding of health and safety they should be complying with or understanding. You might look at using headings like. Correct use of PPE Fire safety Welfare provisions Correct signage management procedure kept and being followed security of site Etc Etc.. I'm sure others and yourself could come up with more and possible relevant headings but as you then do a tour of the site and identify an issue you can then list it under the relevant heading than at the end of the tour you will quickly see if you have a particular issue in one or more areas. how you score the site percentage wise will depend on number of issues found and severity. You need to make sure that the more severe the issue harder the scoring will go against them. Phil

You could use the "Appendix 2: Construction health and safety checklist" from HSG 150, as a basis and use the relavant parts -refer to (it is more of an inspection rather than an audit!):- http://www.hse.gov.uk/pubns/priced/hsg150.pdf

Hector You are strictly looking at a fortnightly Inspection Checksheet and NOT an audit. The best way to approach such a task is to identify the things that often go wrong or those that tend to be forgotten as unimportant. You should also be considering the items in the context of your overall H&S Objectives and the targes linked to these objectives. Another useful area for ideas is the HSE website looking at their primary concerns and campaigns relative to your work. Bob
