Hi Everybody.... At present I'm a Health and Safety Manager of a sub contractor working in West Africa( It's the wet season and it's still hot!). Due to the dry, arrid conditions the soil is a very fine dust. I intend to use P2 dust masks to be worn by all operatives. At present the convention is to use P1. I believe that due to the dust being very fine therefore geting into the PM10 microns ( I could be wrong!) area a P2 should be sufficient. What do people think?

If there is a possibility of respirable chrystalline silica being present in the soil as can be the case with soil in South Africa, then I would suggest P3 masks should be very little additional cost.

Good point well made but on this occasion its the soil not the rock/stone that is producing the dust which I would think has no RCS present. I constantly advising brick layers using a stihl saw about RCS. BTW good info booklet produced by the HSE about RCS. Thanks for your input Bleve
