What is the general view on the refresher period for Fire Warden Training? The RRO para 21 states that training should be 'repeated periodically where appropriate'. We've always recommended to clients that this should be an annual refresher but I note now that some trainers (including some Fire Services) are giving two yearly or longer certificates.

Yes and no - seems we are all going round in circles looking for a defined period that we can use to convice Training Managers they really do need to run these courses regularly. Back to the risk assessment and a bit of old fashioned common sense/coercion again...

In the Service & establishment where I am based, Fire Safety Awareness is to be refreshed every 3 years. That is the recommendation of our central fire safety experts, so I suggest that is a reasonable period. It's not onerous, but it is frequent enough for the memory of it to remain until the next refresher.

What do you mean by fire warden, is it simply someone who acts as an evacuation marshal or someone who undertakes things such as fire inspections and equipment checks? If it an evacuation marshal then the exercises undertaken to test the evacuation process can be used to remind and update the training with some sort of theoretical brief added. If it is the larger task of evacuation and inspection and equiopment checks you need to understand the nature of the task and then judge how well the individuals retain the knowledge required to discharge that duty properly and effectively. No simple answer but the first point is exactly what are you looking for.

Thanks Bob, in this case it the wardens are utilised purely for evacuation purposes so a brief theoretical session after each 6 monthly drill would work well.
