Rather than digressing from the main topic of "Has Lord Young had a "Damascus" Moment?" and with reference to the supposed OTT guidance from HSE on homeworking:- Ray, On a practical basis, in my organisation, we do not risk assess the occasional homeworking and have informed employees to SFAIRP set up their laptops approprately etc etc for that. We do not pay for their desks and so on. I do not think the HSE guidance is meant for the occasonal However there are a few individuals whose contract of employment includes homeworking. For that category, we do a formal risk assessment and the company pays for the desk, chair etc and we do then require that there is a "secluded" area where homeworking is done. We also offer practical defensive driving technique training/assessment to ALL employees as we have recognised driving as being statistically a higher risk activity. It is mandatory for company car drivers (10%), but optional for the rest(90%)

I think that Jay is right to deal with occasional homeworking in the SFRP mode; during the snow earlier this year it would be less risky to workers to operate a laptop from home than commute in. That said, it would be easy to provide a bit of information on good practice and possibly, in the office DSE assessment, include a discussion about setting up for emergency or other brief homeworking situations. Jay, how do you do your road risk training? Is it on the road, classroom or online? I have a situation where I would like to roll out training for low mileage drivers

Our training is on the road. We use an IAM accredited professional who has a direct contract with us. It is similar to ROSPA's In vehicle risk assessment & training consisting of a half day session. The advantage with the professional is that we have the same assessor/trainer at all times.

I suggest that "tele-working" is not necessarily the same as "home working". We do tend to get a bit blinkered here, perhaps not looking beyond people sitting at display screens. Some people are involved in assembly work, the rag trade, etc. For some of these 'industries', there are other significant hazards to consider.
