About to leave the services after 22 years service. Looking into roles as a Health & Safety Adviser / Trainer. Completed the NVQ level 4 OHS & NVQ level 4 Management, NVQ level 4 Teaching in the life long sector, managed to get the RAF to pay for a HSE first aid instructors course. Do i need to join a union before i have a secure job or after i land a job, also which union

You don't need to join a union at all, although I am a member. I suggest you may want to sit back and see where your career takes you. If you end up as a sole trader or self employed then I am not sure if there would be a lot of value to joining one. If you end up in an employed situation then I would find out which unions are active in your employment area, which ones the employer recognises and then make your choice that way. I am in public service so have joined the main public service union, UNISON but there are a number to chose from depending on the industry. Good luck

As Phil stated you don't need to be in a union. I was in one but cancelled my membership over, believe it or not health and safety issues, so it is up to you. I would wait until you find your new job first aswell, as the company may have a prefered union and pay bargaining agreement.
