I have just come to the realisation that it is going to take a while to get a job. I am currently in employment but having graduated recently, I am looking for a better position within London. I have been told by a few agencies that I have been short listed but have had no response. I find this worrying as i have my NEBOSH, BSc (Hons) and 5 years experience. There seem to be very few positions in London and Essex and there does not seem to be many new opportunities listed. Does anyone else feel the same way ?

Yes, I do. In Ireland, the construction industry is on its knees and to be very honest and blunt with you, stay where u are, unless the move you make has "guaranteed job security". BBC Radio 4 has been detailing the numerous cuts that your new government has been introducing to address the budget deficit. Wait for what is coming down the tracks as more and more cuts are announced and confidence descends in the private sector so that they no longer are willing to invest in new projects

TBH from my searches I think there is more work in London than there is in many other parts of the country right now. It's dead for work in Yorkshire right now. I've just had to take on a temp contract with a 125mile round trip everyday (at my expense). Not ideal but you gotta do what you gotta do. You have a job, sit tight, wait until things settle down. Besides my philosophy has always been that if I don't get interviewed or get interviewed but don't get the job then it wasn't the right job for me. No point stressing about it. You'll get there.

Absolutely agree Claire. Spot on. Get it done, if you can do it. I am in a h&s contractor role at the moment in LA -I am the competent person for a local authority - and the potential for my role to be long term/permanent(which is why I took this role and turned down others) has evaporated with the change of government and the expected cuts. My last role was two hours each way, paying London congestion charge and roadside parking, which resulted in what would have been an annual £5-6 grand bill to get to work. More expensive if you use the train to get to work in some circumstances, especially if going into London. I didn't earn enough to be able to justify that but the alternative was unemployment. Safezone, if you want to, PM me and I will give you the recruitment consultants I have found most useful. I have worked in London/Home counties since 2004, and have found that some are more useful than others. Either way, good luck.

I agree, i have worked for the same company for 27yrs now and recently could of got my redundancy due to lay offs in the company and moved on. Looked around different places and there is nothing outside at all.Not big on advice but stay where you are for the moment at least

Think the advice of stay where you are and keep looking is sound. I accepted a redundancy package earlier this year and have not yet managed to secure new employment. I would add that a lot of the positions I have applied for through agencies (not specialist H&S agencies) where my experience ticks the required boxes I have not even had an acknowledgement back and they don't return phone calls so I think they are just trawling for CV's. Good Luck & Take Care

Just to put some context from the other side of the fence. One of our advisers left the country at the end of March and we advertised for his replacement to be interviewed in early April. I was very clear about requirements in the advert, and in the pack which went out; specifically a particular set of skills and experience, and stipulations about the posts' location. We got about 80 applications, about 70 of which did not even begin to meet the skill mix we wanted and/or were from the wrong parts of the country. Those people basically had no chance of an interview. It is, at the moment, an employers market, there are so many applicants for posts that employers, like me, can be very selective indeed. So if you want to move or are looking for work be sure to read the jd/role spec/post requirements very closely. If it asks for stuff you don't have, rest assured that somebody will apply who does tick all the necessary boxes. Sorry for the gloomy message, but to be honest it's been this way for the last two years now, John

If you have experience within a particular industry, send your cv to the top twenty companies in that industry. You have a better paper qualification than most so make sure that stands out. If you can get a few years in with a smaller company take it for the experience. You can make a big difference in a small pond which will give you the chance to develop your skills and get yourself noticed. Don't give up, you have probably worked hard to get your degree, so don't waste all that effort. After a number of years in a senior position I can reflect that I got my first break following graduation just by pure chance. Hopefully you will find something soon.
