I am currently a NEBOSH Diploma qualified CMIOSH and I am mulling over the possibility of studying part time or distance learning for an MSc in H&S Management. I am hearing from some quarters that it would be a good career move and then others who say not. Anyone have any advice / comments? If you believe it a good move to study which institution provides the better options and results

I have recently completed my MSc in Environment, Health and Safety management but struggling to get a job even voluntary work shadowing to kick start my CPD. I am assuming that you are currently an experience H&S professional. If that the case the MSc is a good move with better long term career prospect. I am also assuming that you live in the NE (something about Tees on your profile). The University of Sunderland offer a one year full time of two years part MSc programme which is accredited by IOSH (H&S part of the programme). The environment side offers well package mixture of modules ranging from waste management and Environmental Management Systems to Life Cycle Analysis. The H&S side more or less combines the NEBOSH Gen and Dip syllabus so you would be entering a familiar area. I think you might even get to sit out the H&S modules with Dip. I think the environmental side of the programme gives a competitive edge as a lot of company is looking for people with EHS and Auditing qualification. I am currently undertaking an Health, Safety and Environmental Management MSc with Oxford Brookes University through Woodland Grange. It involves five full time one-week attendances at Woodland Grange which suited my way of learning. There is obviously a whole lot of home sudy and work required as well and the dissertation to do too. The entrance requirement is a NEBOSH Diploma, although it is a very different approach than NEBOSH. Don't underestimate the time required to dedicate to this.
Not too sure whether it will prove to be a good career move or not, time will tell. Hopefully it will demonstrate to employers that you can be educated to that level as well as the subject knowledge. Doesn't make any difference to IOSH membership once you go beyond NEBOSH Diploma. Personally I did it as it seemed like the next logical step and to prove to myself that I could as I left school at 16 with only O Grades and did not go into further education at that time.
