Hi all
Could anyone possibly direct me towards legislation that exists or acop for lorry mounted cranes working next to a motorway. I think chapter 8? offers some scope but as of yet I have been unable to obtain it and have had to make with information minutes and the odd case study
cheers

Hi Andy
To my knowledge there is no specific legislation with respect to lorry mounted cranes near motorways, chapter 8 is the corner stone of sign, lighting and guarding which sets out minimum distances, tapers etc to ensure sufficient protection to workers on the highway.
Would this not be part of the risk assessment which should cover any associated work being carried out by the lorry mounted crane??

Chapter 8 can be downloaded here
http://dftsearch.dft.gov...amp;q=chapter+8&pg=1
There are two sections, Pt1 and Pt2. As the previous post suggests, there is no information in it about using the lorry loader in these situations. The general principles will apply always with lorry loaders, regardless of site along with site specific hazards/risks.

If this work can be defined as 'construction work' then CDM Regs apply. Allied Guidance HSG151 has a pertinent example (relating to a real-life accident) at page 10.
CDM ACoP and HSG151 available as free pdf from HSE website.

You might also want to have a look at BS7121 which is the Code of Practice for Crane and Part 4 specifically covers lorry loaders.

if the jib/load swings out over 'anothers' property you will also need to consider this aspect
