Working Well Together and HSE event aimed at construction industry event tomorrow the 22nd of July.

Just wondered if anybody else on the forums was attending or had been to something similar before?
Quite looking forward to this. Watched a couple of murder trials when I studied law 20 or so years ago and although mag court will not be in same league as a full blown crown court trial, should still be an interesting morning.

Yes, I have and It frightened the living bejaysus out of me. Trust me, when you see the prosecution in action, you thank your lucky stars its not you in the firing line.
It makes you more alert as to what you should be doing, how you should be doing it and been blunt, making sure its not you in the dock.

I know it isn't expensive for the half day for what it'll cover, but do people know you can go to any Employment Tribunal (yes i know it isn't a trial) free of charge?
Basically you can find out what is due on the day before and book in as a guest as such.
More suited to people dealing with HR and disciplinary issues obviously.

Indeed, you can go to any trial free of charge although there are sometimes queues for high profile cases.
Todays mock trial was very interesting. Prosecution of a building firm and its MD following an accident involving a semi automatic hitch failure on an excavator (locking pin missing) - causing injury to the banksman. Firm had been advised to switch to fully automatic hitch systems by an HSE inspector 3 months earlier but only implemented the change at one site, not all.

I went to one that WWT organised a few years ago R v Bob D Builder ! very good - the afterwards talk and explantion was very interesting, IIRC they had an actual magistrate play the part of the magistrate.

Stevie,
I ran two similar events for the Food and Drinks Group, both of which I was in the dock. During the first event I was subjected to a full cross examination charged with Manslaughter. Prior to which I was advised by my defense counsel what I could and should try not to reveal. Within minutes I did not know what I had revealled and what I had not. I came out of the box with my hand dripping with persperation (to much detail I know). I said after the first event that I would never voluntarily go back into the box. Prior to this I thought wrongly that I could cope with such an experience, I was wrong. Prior to the start of the event which was chaired by a serving crown court judge, who stated to my horror, that the advocates will forget that this court is a mock trial and act and behave exactly as they would in a crown court and present their cases accordingly. To put it bluntly, they took me apart, so much so that the prosecution apologised to me after the event. Whilst I said that I would never go back into the box, in actual fact I did at the second event at the Crown Plaza in Liverpool. Big mistake.
If I were you I would go but stay clear of the cross examination, Court room humour can be quite funny even when you are the brunt of the jokes.
I hope that this helps you make up your mind.
