Is anyone up to speed on the proposal from Skills (CITB) to revoke the grant rebates for construction courses i.e. SMSTS; SSSTS etc?
My understanding is that all their grant rebates are to stop as from the end of this next month, is this correct, please let me know.
also, what impact do we think this is going to have on our construction industry?
Many thanks in anticipation (for you comments/views).

and just to add, i have enquired with various agencys to obtain funding for health and safety training funding and have been told no funding is avaliable as heath and safety is "not conciderd to be underfunded". stinks if you ask me, Construction health and safety can still be improved a long way but needs funding.

I’ve now spoken to a couple of CSkills providers, both of which have said that grants will be stopping for SMSTS and SSSTS by the end of next month - lets hope not!

If the UK Government follows the lead of the Irish Government expect to see everything decimated.

yes lets hope not things are hard enough in construction at the moment. i have just had to pay six grand to enrol for my diploma because my company can not pay it. A little help would have been ideal. we also have a few lads who have got to do the smsts refresher,so hope there is still funding there!

I’ve been unfortunate to get the information from reliable sources, so I think it will happen. Apparently due to the fact that CSkills is in the red and the government will not assist financially?
A lot of the issues have been from organisations that solely rely on the former CITB grants to make a living.
As most of the money comes from the construction industry itself via the levy, CSkills have been paying out more than they receive.
I can see this having a real detrimental effect on the construction industry, if this does happen.

companys like mine,( employing around 50 staff) have depended on the citb funding to train our existing and new staff in key areas. we will not be able to afford to train our opeartives to the high standards that we have. the youngsters training under formal apprentiships are geting a decent ammount of health and safety training in with their apprentiship training. The big problem is still, up skilling and providing formal health and safety training for the senior operative. i feel we have only just started to change the attitude and out look on health and safety that senior operative has or has had. this change in attitude has been helped through their gain in knowlage of health and safety subjects via training.Without geting political we all know how much goverment money gets wasted . pay a bit of that wasted money over to the provided training , thats what i say !

The achievement grant for SSSTS and SMSTS has gone but you can still get the attendance grant which I think is £17.50 a day although I stand to be corrected.

The new grant scheme came into effect on the 1st August. Companies paying the levy should have received a letter outlining the key changes to the grants. There are some significant changes to the previous grant framework.

Thanks YulKok, it would seem that the grants have been reduced significantly.
As an example the SMSTS 5day course was eligible for up to £320, this has now been reduced to the standard £17.50 per day (£87.50).
I can see this having a detrimental effect on training within the construction industry.

Unfortunately small businesses will suffer. We only have 23 employees but because of our high risk work - electrical we pay well. The new rules in effect will see us paying for larger companies to keep training but we won't be able to extend our training - down to must haves and contract requirements. even that leaves us payign for trainign and CSkills but not achieveing an equal return. One large company told me they made 150% from training!

...The Train to Gain...offers employers training for existing staff unless that route has been cut off as well this was done through the "job centre plus" we used it to get NVQ training...for Fork lift drivers...and driver training for CPC ..they were funding Heaklth and Safety Training as well

I'm afraid the Train To Gain resources are also being restricted, even more than CSkills grant rebates. A sign of the times?

Looks like they are going down the ROI route.

I think this will have a knock-on effect with safety training providers, all very disheartening.
