Hi,
Does anyone know where I can find information relating to the guarding recommendations / requirements of automated press stud / snap fastener machines? Tried BS, ISO etc but nothing specific to be found.

Hi,
Don't know of anything specific but the HSE document HSG129 (freely available) is excellent to assist in carrying out a risk assessment and ensuring compliance with PUWER:

In the past I've used Safety With Machinery (Ridley and Pearce) for general guidance
See - http://www.amazon.co.uk/...id=1279829692&sr=8-1
Can you describe the machine?
I have in mind a small pedastal mounted punch / press type affair into which the garment is inserted and then the operator depresses a pedal to energise the press punch and insert the stud. I've seen similar stuff used in the footwear industry and the usual method of guarding is concealment with fixed guards allowing sufficient space to insert the garment but not a finger.
If you're talking larger, more automated plant, can you describe the operator access requirements for feed, takeoff and during the power cycle.

Hi Steve - thanks for your reply. Sorry, I have been out of the office. Yes, you have described the machine perfectly which is pushing me to look at the guard design as it does not prevent finger access.
