Is there a Health & Safety basis of why we have to sign our names in the signing-in book every day we come into work? We already hand in a time sheet at the end of the month, why do we have to sign-in each day as well? Thank you.

The first one that springs to mind is for fire safety so if there is a need to evacuate then everybody can be checked of against the sign in book. of course this only works if everyone signs in and out then entering or leaving the premises. An alternative is to adopt a fire warden sweep method which does away with the need for signing in and out which i believe is not very accurate./
But that's the main reason i can think off.

Yes, historically it comes from emergency procedures (i.e. Fire Evacuation).

As above, plus time sheets are reliant on the integrity of those completing them. They can be checked against the signing in book. I think you will find the process of signing in more to do with tracking peoples' hours, rather than security or fire safety issues - hey, ho.

I remember working at ICI many years ago. We had a lovely fountain pen with proper ink to sign-in a very nice parchment log.
How standards have dropped – lol!

Probably a fire register as above but I do know of employers that use the sign in book to check people are on site.

I suppose swipe cards, retina scans, hand scans etc. are the new signing-in registers?

Most employees use a clocking in/out system, but if you sign in then people know you are on site, so if there is a fire, or an evacuation then a roll call would be done, This also covers you if you have an accident at work, as it can be proved you were at work at the time stated, as some employees sign the accident book a few days after the accident occured. Then the investigation starts to see how the incident happened, maybe for instance playing football the weekend,

I'd agree that the only real reason is fire safety but there is no legal requirement to sign in and out and many premises are not in a postion to do so.
