Is there any standard dicatating the frequency of testing or what your be good practice?

I had a similar issue a few years back the simple answer is no, you need to look at the manufacturers instructions, the frequency of use etc, you will most probably need to carry out a risk assessment to determine the frequency that you need to check each interlock and e-stop at your facilility. Please see my comments in a very similar thread.
On new equipment this should be automatic and have redundancy designed in from the conceptual level to comply with legislation.
I encourage operators to operate e-stops daily.
Any and all maintenance schedules I design have interlock & e-stop checks undertaken at every full maintenance point by suitably skilled personnel.
This could be 12m, 6m, 3m, 1m, 1wk, or daily depending upon the complexity of the equipment, the hazards and the control system.

I asked for daily testing my operators, where practicle, ie: on start up or shut down, not during full scale production. The production manager never really liked that when that happened.
