I would really appreciate some views on how to proceed along the path to Chartered Member Status. I currently work within the Civil Service (in a H & S role), and am just awaiting the result of my final exam to achieve my Diploma in Occup H & S, which will take me to Graduate status. I've been in post since Jan 2006 (having had no previous involvement in the field), and other than the Diploma, have passed the NEBOSH General Certificate and have attended various IOSH level courses (e.g. MH risk assessor courses). As for a lot of us, my Department is really feeling the squeeze, so I doubt very much I would be able seek approval for any further training at the present time. Are there any practical measures I can take which will help build experience? Just wondered how others had gone about it. Many thanks in advance.

Ian I have been doing safety in the civil service (MOD and Home Office) for around 22 years and times have always been tight! However, the current squeeze is a challenge. The thing to remember is that not all CPD costs; local IOSH Branch events are free and usually good for some development or maintenance activity. Also, do not overlook your work activities; if you have to do some research to deal with a work problem, that is development too. IPD is definately not about 'going on courses'. I have a team of practitioners who are all on the road to CMIOSH and I am confident they can all do it without too much expense. Happy to discuss 1:1 if you would like more info. Cheers Steve Hartley

Ian You need to get a higher level of qulaification either NEBOSH Diploma NVQ 4 or a Degree Honours Degree or Masters Degree. You can find accredited IOSH qualifications on the IOSH website this is the URL http://www.iosh.co.uk/me...ing_a_qualification.aspx You need to consider how much you want to spend, how much support you will need, how you kearn best and of course how quickly you can access one of the chosen courses. You can contact your Branch BEDA ring memebrship or give me a call talking is sometimes better. I will PM you my details regards Tim Briggs
