Hi guys, I'm looking for inspiration here! I've a meeting with managers next week to discuss RA review. They've said for years they don't like the format and whilst I agreed, it was the Corporate format, and that was that. We managed to come away from that and now I want to throw some suggestions for formats of assessments. Has anyone got a template they can share please? Even if I poach a few ideas from a few assessments and fine tune it to our needs, but its really somehting that will aid they guy on the ground with understanding it and using it. Obviously we'd follow this up with training. I'd just like something to take to the table. TIA

Safetygirl - it's still not that clear to me whether you want a template for a risk assessment or some examples of completed risk assessments for the waste industry (you don't say which part). How about having a look at the WISH pages on the HSE website for some inspiration? http://www.hse.gov.uk/waste/wish.htm There is also other resources on the HSE website that should prove useful.

Safety - does not matter what the format is as long as it details the salient points. I can see this as an opportunity for you to get buy in from corporate and use the corporate forms to allocate accountability and responsibilty. This will no doubt gather the attention of a director or owner who thinks different. Follow you instincts here and good luck. David

I personally do not use Risk assessment Templates, i have had to explain the reason for this to our clients Health & Safety advisors on numerous occasions, my understanding is that we should include the 5 steps to a Risk Assessment and make it easily understandable at all levels. I have to check through our Sub Contractors Risk Assessments, many of which are Templated, i find it very hard to actually understand them, especially the formatted electronic ones, which they merely rattle off and are usually not job or site specific. My Risk Assessments are laid out and typed by me personally, i depict the Hazard, who may be affected by it, the level of Risk, associated Risks and control measures, simple ABC stuff, but completely specific to the task, Hazards and associated Risks, why would you want to use a Template and is there actually one that would cover the Risk Assessment which you are attempting to compile??

The template could be generic, as could the risk and controls, but they may also be quite specific to your particular industry. For example, working with hand-held electrical power tools would be the same risks and outcomes regardless of the actual industry. In my industry we use a 5 times 5 risk matrix with Activity, Risk and Likelihood being the principal factors with Controls to mitigate the risk. The principle is quite simple really. PM if you want a template.
