Hello again folks, Allow me to explain. We use large self-propelled trailers which are operated from a pendant type 'remote' control unit allowing the operator to stand anywhere within a 10m radius of the engine. Operators therfore walk with the trailer (they move slowly) as it drives along, constantly moving within this 10m radius to watch for obstructions/adjust steering, sometimes 1-2m from the engine noise source, sometimes the full 10m away. These operations take place in all sorts of different surroundings, some last only half an hour, some might last a full shift. The load being carried is generally large but can be any size/length etc and sometimes causes additiona reverberation. The operators have to communicate with banksmen verbally and through radios. The engines are noisy but obviously the noise exposure for the individual depends on all the above mentioned factors, and no two jobs/individuals/sites are alike. Does anyone have any suggestions as to how I can conduct a meaningful Noise survey/assessment with a view to determining appropriate control measures? I have access to a class II integrating SLM with Octave band analysis. Thanks Kay

Kay If you are competent to carry out a noise assessment, you should hire some noise dosemeters, given the observed variability in exposure. Do bear in mind, though, that initial data may be skewed by jokers singing into them, tapping them or testing (1,2,1,2) etc. LB

I considered that but I'm concerned that the results could still be very skewed both ways unless I spend a lot of time and money supervising, conducting and repeating measurements for a lot of different people & situations - some operators/supervisors/managers really don't want anything to be changed and others strongly do. Is there anything worthwhile I can do with the available SLM? Thanks

I would suggest Kay that you will get far better results with a number of dosimeters used over a period of time (consider hiring them). You could use the SLM and carry out a number of measurements and then do some rather complex calculations but this will be very skewed.
