Hi Guys,
I problem trying to compare my incident stats against HSE annual statisics. We are food manufacturing.
I use the following calculations (Below numbers) but i can't see how to compare this to see how we are compared to other food manufacturing industries?
AFR 2010 YTD = 1.0
IR 2010 YTD = 9.09
ASR 2010 YTD = 0.15
Accident Frequency Rate
No. of lost-time accidents x 100,000 divided by No. of man hours worked
Incidence Rate
No. of work-related injuries x 100 divided by Avge no. of persons employed
Severity Rate
Total no. of days lost x 1,000 divided by Total no. of man-hours worked

Trade associations can be helpful for this sort of comparison, is your company a member of one?

Personally I don't think you'll find it any use. There are so many non-injury factors which affect the stats, the exercise loses any meaning. Best comparator is yourself year on year.
e.g When I was in Rover Group, on paper, Llanelli Pressings (1,000 employees) and Triumph Liverpool Speke plant (2,000 emps) had more lost time accidents each per month than Longbridge (35,000 emps). The reality was that local geographical factors and traditions play a large part in absence, skewing the figures.

Thank you. I ahve only started with the company and they have not tracked any of these KPIs before so there is no bench mark. At present i can look at accident stats but that is only comparsion.
I wanted to look at other food manufacturing industry to see if we had very high figures or not and also to give the directors some indication of how the site is performing and how important it will be to push things forward.
What does the HSE stats do if we can't compare ourselves against them?

You will find that HSE quote injury rates (reportable to them, so Lost Time only) per 100,000 employees. So you can compare that with your rate per 100 employees by dividing the HSE data by 1000. HSE long ago stopped producing stats related to hours worked, but very few organisations copied them!
