could anyone clarify a situation for me regarding the use of scafftags. I inspect the mobile platforms in our 2 depots weekly, but the existing tags on the platforms are now nearing full, as in there is no space for new entries on them.
I went to order new tags only to be told by the other H&S advisor to use graffiti remover to take off the existing marker and start a new.
A written record is also kept of the scaffold condition on file, would this be breaking legislation by removing the pen entries on the tags and not replacing them with new scafftags?

Hi Andy,
I've sent you a PM with information about our alternative system which provides you with duplicate copies, tamper evident features etc which may prove of interest. I think you would need to keep the completed tags for cross reference in the event of an incident.

No. There is no legal requirement as far as I am aware for a scafftag, therefore you cannot be breaking the law. Scafftags are seen as good practice to ensure people on site are aware whether the towers are fit for use, checked frequently and erected by a competent person.

Although there isn't a legal requirement to use 'scafftags', they are what's deemed 'best practice' and the only time concern i would have is i'm sure you have to keep any tags you do have for 3 months as part of the W@H Regs. Erasing these could leave you open to possible litigation.
For peace of mind, wouldn't it be easier to purchase a few more scafftags?

This is a no brainer...
Photocopy the scafftags and then erase the them and start again (a dab of petrol works, always take safety precautions). Bear in mind that the tags are not a record of inspection, only that the scaffold has been inspected and deemed safe to use. A formal report/record should be kept for 3 months, this would be by way of a checklist used by the inspector.
I'll wait for the remarks about using a bit of petrol....
