Can anyone give me any info on the C.I.E.H professional trainers certificate , I'm considering taking the course and wondering what it entails and how it would affect my CPD .

Not sure about what the course entails, but for CPD purposes you need to bear in mind that there isn't really a fixed tariff any more; in other words, a set number of hours training don't equal a set number of points. For a trainers certificate you could probably award yourself points in transferable skills, and in maintaining existing skills for example. How much it's worth is down to your own evaluation of what you have learned from it, how you have put it into practice and how it has helped you to develop, and in principle you can claim points for all of these aspects and possible even more. Ring the CPD people at IOSH for more details, but in a nutshell if it honestly helps your personal development then you can honestly claim a fair few points I would say, John

Dear Pyle I would imagine that any Training Trainer Course will add considerably to your CPD. Skills you will enhance or learn may include: How to motivate learners How to give effective learning presentations How to set up classrooms for total involvement How to set learning objectives Different techniques for assessment Setting assessments designing question sets Torchbeam effects when using questions during training Using different teaching methods skills teaching for example Report writing skills Personal organisational skills The above are just a few, so hopefully it can be demonstrated that within this venture there will be many and varied learning opportunities for yourself. Similarly when you start putting all this into practice you will if you go about the tasks correctly begin to learn very quickly from your students. You will find that teaching is a two way learning process very much like mentoring and your CPD opportunities will expand exponentially. You may also develop the "Learning Bug" yourself - which will offer other CPD opportunities. Good luck with the course, and if you need any tips or book pointers give me a PM. Or alternatively turn up to one of the Yorkshire Branch meetings and we can meet up and discuss there. Best regards Tim Briggs (PS I have been training and teaching for 25 years and am still learning the tricks of the trade so CPD is never ending).

I would just add to Tim's post that I think the PTLLS (pronounced PETALS by many) is probably the best route to follow nowadays as any course receiving government funding in any way require this training standard for tutors. Bob

PTLLS; CTLLS and DTLLS seems to be the courses that employers want to see.
