Hi, I was wondering if anyone could help me. I recently took a redundancy pakage from my employer so I could pursue a full time career within health and safety. I have the NEBOSH diploma and certificate and I have experience in health and safety through my position as a team leader in my last job. I've applied for a number of health and safety roles but most of the replies I've received comment on the lack of experience I have. I understand i need more experience in the field but how do you get this without a job?. I'm willing to do unpaid/ low paid work to gain experience, but does anyone know who to approach or what would be best to increase my chances of a career in health and safety. Thanks for your time. Daryl

Now was not a good time to change career. Sorry, but that's how it is. Keep applying and you may get lucky with a job but even those of use with lots of qualifications and experience are struggling. Location in the country may help (there's nothing here) may be best to say where you are.

Clairel is quite correct, times are very hard in this profession. Many Chartered Practitioners with a vast amount of experience and technical ability are not even getting to the interview stage. It’s not all doom and gloom, jobs are available and for someone getting into this profession I would say do as much networking as you can. Good Luck.

All true. I have spoken to a number of recruitment consultants recently who all gave the same message - that this has been the worst summer for H&S jobs that they remember, for a number of reasons - election, economy, recession, Young's review, etc. Highly experienced and qualified practitioners are being offered much less than they would have been offered a while back if successful at interview. But they all also said the same thing, that the market can only improve, and will. Keep trying, you will get something, and it will be all the sweeter when you do. Best of luck Martin
