Coming clean. the enquiry shouldn't take much time. Most of the research has already been done; many times. Various gov depts have done it over the past ten years. Many of the reforms" to the "claims culture" (sic) have also been done. http://www.thompsons.law...compensation-culture.htm

I think this statment is spot on. Why are people affraid of saying that people die at work, they do. People will always die at work, its a fact of life, we have to be sensible and try and reduce the amount of people who die at work but we will never stop it completely.

I think that this isn’t about what he’s trying to say - most would agree that deaths will occur, more to do with how he‘s said it and the implications from it. From someone who is a political figurehead his words come across as insensitive and inappropriate given his position. His choice of words to express an opinion is quite unfortunate on this occasion. Some may see this as implication to acceptance of the thousands that die each year from work related injuries and ill health. He is of course entitled to freedom of speech and his own personal views; but these comments were made as a figurehead and as such will be scrutinised by others.

Some interesting comments. I have little problem with what he has been quoted as saying, the harsh reality is that he is entirely correct, although I think smurf got it right, the word 'regrettable' would have been a better choice of word, but it is largely semantics. The fact is that the essence of what was said is a fact of life and it is enshrined in law; isn't it?

Good evening all and Evening mods To read a good response to this quote by Lord young "By 19 June, the former Tory employment and trade secretary, in a move that reinforced the suspicion the outcome of the review was pre-ordained, was telling the Times “People occasionally get killed, it’s unfortunate but it’s part of life” and declaring health and safety regulations protecting office workers were “nonsense”. The Tory peer added that police and paramedics should be excluded from health and safety laws." You can see the context it was said in and also read a response. Myself I find the actual quote very insensitive and offensive. This is the URL to the article http://www.hazards.org/votetodie/slashandburn.htm It is also another good learning resource. I am not promoting the magazine merely highlighting where a view may be read. Regards Tim B
