I have just started a new job and have been asked a question about refractory ceramic fibres, something not in my immediate area of expertise... I have checked for data with the ECFIA, but would like to do some further research. Has anyone any experience of working with these fibres or any information sources they would be willing to share? Or better still... any alternative products which would be a suitable replacement? Any assistance greatly appreciated.

"Body Soluble" products are available - speak to the manufacturers who are normally very helpful - MSDS usually has plenty information on work methods and PPE and COSHH assessment would be starting points I would have used.

The task requiring the use of the RFC material is currently undertaken by an external contractor. My firm has been asked to take the task in house. As yet we do not use the product and therefore have no SWP / COSHH assessments for the product. I have been supplied MSDS and other data by our contractor, however I would rather have more detailed information before taking the decision whether to take the task in-house hence my post. Whilst the ECFIA has a wide variety of information available, it appears to be a trade body and more impartial data sources or suggestions of alternative products which could be followed up were what I was after. Having read several reports about RFC, I'd prefer to consult a wider source of data than I currently have before commiting to a decision.

The ECFIA does appear to be the main source of information regarding vitreous silicate fibres. However, you will also find useful references to papers on the subject, for example, those written by LD Maxim et al, on some manufacturers' MSDS. HSE also had an Operational Circular on the hazards of ceramic fibres - OC 267/3 - which should come up on a search of their site. Regards, Danny
