Is this a trade secret? We have a tenant on our site and our H&S team act as their H&S competent person. We calculate the price we charge on a nominal 4 days per year. How much do you independents charge per day for this service? Include an audit and review of documentation, and some training, DSE etc.

You could ask "How long is a piece of string"? Answer How Long is a Chinese person :-) Joking aside it really depends on a number of factors i.e. the individual and his/her competence and experience, the type of work, whether travel is involved with overnight stay expenses, how much work is involved, for example is it a long term contract with guaranteed work hence a reduced rate. Lots more beside. This has been asked before and fees of between £150 and £1000 per day have been mentioned.

It all depends on what sort of service you want, what skill set you are looking to buy in, the level of competence of the consultant, what they think they can get away with and how desperate they are for work to name but a few. However, I have seen everything from £150 per day to over £1500 per day

Some more detail then. The consultant is CMIOSH, and is familiar with the area of work of the company. He has offered to: • Provide them with a bespoke Health and Safety Policy statement and an Organisation and Arrangements Document • There will be a safety manual • They will review the above documentation • And some basic training – “H&S why we do it and why it’s important” • They will be available to investigate incidents • Carry out specialised assessments • Carry out an annual audit They are not that desperate for the work but want to charge a fair market rate.

£50 per hour plus any 'out of pocket expenses' e.g. diesel/petrol overnight stays, etc - this has in my experience, been acceptable and I don't have any problem with work at these rates, so probably could get away with charging more Furthermore, I don't have large premises overheads and/or any extra employee costs - I work from purpose built office at home and people who work for me are on an associate basis, others may have to charge more if they have greater overheads, e.g. work out of office/industrial unit premises. For these I have seen rates of between £65 and £85 per hour.
