In light of all things Lord Young and the constant riddiculing by the press how about an IOSH television advert based on the infamous sketch in the Life of Brian entitled 'What has health and safety ever done for us?'
Perhaps the characters could be a mixture of employers and politicians.
So 'What has health and safety ever done for us?'
Nothing.....
Well theres the reduction in workplace fatalities
Yes, that goes without mentioning.....
over to you...

Revocation of the Hemp Spinning & Weaving Regulations 1907. But that's a given.

I missed that one, now I need to update my work instructions!
Health & Safety? Luxury; we used to dream of health and safety! When I were a lad we used to go down pit, no safety shoes and only a party hat for protection.
Party hat? We used to dream of a party hat
I seem to have spun of to a different sketch! Still, anyone for tennis?

Made it illegal for a coal mine to allow a slag heap to fall on a school.
Look up Aberfan on Wikipedia.
The amazing thing was at the time (1966) there was no duty on an employer to ensure the Health and Safety of non-employees affected by their undertaking. This is why we have section 3 of the Health and Safety at Work Act. Interestingly the Chairman of the Coal Board was Lord Robens; the same Lord Robens who’s report is the basis of our current much maligned H&S laws.

Poacher turned gamekeeper comes to mind! But the result was worth while, even if the root cause was reprehensible!

apparently the Romans did not do all the roads; it is now though by many experts that the Romans followed older Celt roads that were already in place and were very good in many areas!

Yes Bob
Much as the HSWA followed the earlier Factories Act, Offices Shops and railways and other similar acts dating back to the 19th century. So H&S isn't really that new then.

So apart from:
• Reducing workplace fatalities;
• Ending child labour;
• General improvements in working conditions and welfare;
• Making it illegal for employers to kill and maim their employees and others in pursuit of profit;
• A simplification in the regulatory regime since 1974;
• The establishment of regulatory agencies to enforce the above;
• Provision of tons of guidance and ACOP’s to make the employers job easier;
• Preventing disease;
• prolonging life;
• promoting health;
• the promotion and maintenance of the highest degree of physical, mental and social well-being of workers in all occupations;
• the prevention amongst workers of departures from health caused by their working conditions;
• the protection of workers in their employment from risks resulting from factors adverse to health; and
• the placing and maintenance of the worker in an occupational environment adapted to his physiological and psychological capabilities.

Stopped us playing conkers, climbing trees, enjoying ourselves, using ladders, taking short cuts, playing games(football, might get hurt, rugby, outdoor activities, playing football on the school yard, wearing earring's, necklaces and bracelets (livestrong, anti bullying rubber bands etc). Done quite a lot really. I could have thought of more but I got fed up.
