I'm wondering, out of curiosity, if one were to become self-employed carrying out asbestos surveys is it a necessity to become UKAS accredited? Obviously it would be beneficial but is it a legal requirement and does this depend on the type of survey - Management or Refurb/Dem? I know some companies who carry out Management surveys without it. Cheers

Have a look at the following HSE Guidance. http://www.hse.gov.uk/as...paign/duty/surveyors.htm I take it that UKAS is an organisations accreditation where ABICS is an accreditation for an individual (i'm assuming sole trader or individual within an organisation). I believe there to be three survey types requiring differing levels of competency.

No, UKAS accreditation is not legally required unless you are undertaking analytical/ laboratory activities. The survey itself does not need UKAS accreditation though, whether its management or refurb/ dem. The most important thing is competency and experience. Your starting point should be BOHS P402 and move on from there... UKAS and ABICS are two separate things run by different organisations. We've tried with no success to join ABICS as it appears to be 'dead in the water' (sorry for repeating myself as I've posted that comment elsewhere on another post). There are no longer three types of survey, only two - 'management' or 'refurbishment/ demolition'.

Thanks Gerry, Learn something every day. Although public sector clients are still asking for type 1,2,3 surveys.
