I have been made aware of a requirement under the new Equalities Act (October 2010) to ensure compliance through installing hearing aid loops and also maintaining them. Technically it appears that if we don’t have maintenance arrangements in place then we are not compliant.
Could anyone offer any back up to this information either through knowledge or experience in working with them as I have rarely come into contact with them.
Regards
Alan

Correct me if I'm wrong but I don't think this is a new requirement - if you need hearing loops in order to provide your service to all your customers, then you would already have to install them and keep them in working order under the existing Disability Discrimination Act. If they don't work they aren't any good! You have to make the assessment of what you need to provide, it depends on the end result (the public being able to access your service) rather than there being a list of specific things you must do. I suggest that rather than get bogged down in the details of hearing loops, you arrange an access audit of your company - there are consultants who do this and can advise you on what you actually need.
Steer clear of equipment suppliers who say that under legislation you must have this or must have that - they are rarely telling the real story. I've even seen a flyer that claimed that under new legislation, all fire exit signs must include Braille - complete rubbish!

I went to RNID for info. We got a portable system from them which we transport around for our Board and training meetings etc. As we use it as work equipment it's on our records as such. haven't really thought about any formal maintenance we just check its still working before we take it out.
A tip I got for the mic (type which sits in centre of table)is to put it on a sponge and this helps stop pick up of vibration when folk lean on the table.

Thanks thus far for all answers, but the way i am looking at it at the moment is purely and simply from the Maintenance of the equipment point of view and if this is required to conform to the new regulations i mentioned?

Something as specific as "You must have hearing loops and maintain them" just isn't the sort of thing that goes into equality legislation, it comes from a completely different standpoint.
What have you been told exactly about this alleged requirement? I strongly suspect that the reason no one has backed it up is that it doesn't exist.

I'm surprised this government went through with this act. With all the moaning about costs and red tape to business I've been reading about

Well I suppose they would come under PUWER then which does actually state "Work equipment "Shall" be kept in good and efficient repair" and the only way to do that is to have a regime of maintenance for it.
It was the company that installed them that said there was a requirement under the new Equalities Act (October 2010) to ensure compliance through installing hearing aid loops and also maintaining them. Which is why i was sceptical as i always find it hard to believe anyone that has something to gain by what they are telling me.
