Hi All,
I'm leaving the Army next year around November after 22 years, My background in the forces is transport but i am trying to make a clean break and change the direction of my next career.I have just done my NEBOSh general, Fire safety and risk management and construction certificates. I have £2000 to spend on a course in April next year and was wondering what the best course would be to stand a chance at getting work in health and Safety. Any advice would be greatly appreciated
Thanks
Jason

Unfortunately, unless you supplement it, you probably don't have enough to do a NEBOSH Diploma course, which would be the way to go.
Some alternatives that you could look at and would help:
OHSAS 18001 Auditor / Lead Auditor
IEMA Environment Course
If you have a background in Transport (not sure what area) you could look at a Dangerous Goods Safety Adviser training (not sure of the cost).
Hope that helps and best of luck.

Jase32, it all depends on what you want to achieve and the industry you are looking to get in to?
If I were you I would contact the membership department of IOSH and ask for advice. The NEBOSH Dip is only one of may routes to Chartered status, if that is how you want to proceed.
Many universities can offer courses of the same academic level or higher level qualifications. These may be subsidised, which will make your money go further.
Best of luck.

Hi
If you want a change but not leave your expertise behind completely - why not teach/train? For that you should consider the PTTLS (prepare to teach in life long learning sector) or Assessing on transport (A1 Award). Both of those would come under the ELCAS band and you could add in CPC or some lifting to round it off.
You could then tie the above into general consultancy skills and look at the NVQ 4 in Occupational H&S Practice a year down the line.
Regards
Linda

Have you thought at looking into the asbestos arena, there are many topics here that you could look at and you will all most be in the driving seat for employment with your Health and Safety qualifications. I spent 15 years in the armed forces and work in both of these areas. i would also like to talk to further on this matter as i am currently wanting individuals to work in my company undertaking Health and Safety as well as asbestos issues. email: davenichol@nicholassociates.co.uk

Similar situation, I'm looking to start a career as a H&S professional following redundancy.
I've got H&S experience as a lab manager ie writing RA & SSOW, completing accident investigation, PTW systems, PPE selection, STOP inspections, contractor selection plus many other strings to my bow...
I've got IOSH managing safely, NEBOSH cert (distinction) and just waiting on the D unt for Dip NEBOSH.
I can start on any half decent salary but can't even get shadow / voluntary work, let alone to interview!
Next step is PTTLS & CTTLS quals, CSCS card, first aid cert and keep knocking on doors; looking bleak though i must admitt!

Jason, why not use your Enhanced Learn Credits or is that what the 2K is? I used mine when I left the RAF to pay for the Dip and added a bit more to it.
