Hi; when looking at the possibility of radon exposure in a single storey building - having paid for the HPA search and found 'the estimated probability of the property being above the action level for radon is 5 - 10%' what is the general consensus that this reading is Low/Medium or High - I can then use this to formulate the risk assessment. The building is a retail premise with plenty of natural ventilation (draughts and doors open), there are no below ground voids/rooms etc. Or would we be better off paying for the detailed monitoring (which admittedly is fairly a reasonable cost) to confirm the levels? Thanks in advance.

Stuie Radon in buildings is a strange beast - I am based in a high risk area (over 30%) and we recently tested an underground room that is occupied 24-7. I was dreading the results, but the (thankfully) came out well below the action level. I have seen buildings side by side where one had high levels and another low. You say you have no basements or voids in your building - if that means you are sat on a solid raft foundation then it is quite possible radon levels will be high. I would go for the monitors if I were you just so you know exactly what you are dealing with. Don't forget that if the levels are above the 400Bq m-3 you will need to appoint a suitable qualified Radiation Protection Adviser. Apologies if I am teaching you to suck eggs. Brian

Thank you Brian; have gone ahead and ordered the monitoring stations; to put all concerned minds at rest (hopefully! :-)) may end up worrying them stupid if the results are high!?!
