I am a first time forum user - a major issue in our company is fork lift truck activity and manual handling.Does anyone have any information on how to mitigate risks associated with these activities?

Andrew, a great place to start is the HSE website which gives good avice on both of these subjects but from a UK legal perspective. If you are based outside UK the advice will still be valid but disregard the references to law.

Spend some time navigating around the site and there's loads of good stuff freely available.
