Guys, I'm trying to investigate the level of public awareness in the aforementioned area. Please tell me what you know about. Are people really aware? If yes, do they really understand what it means and what they can do. I'll appreciate your response to this topic. Williams

As for global warming I asked some work colleagues and they all said roughly the same thing - yes they are aware of global warming and yes global warming has been discredited - and they think that windmills and waves is the most stupid idea going; they all (14 of them) backed nuclear energy. None of them would buy solar panels either (cost prohibitive) and takes a life time to get your money back. They all thought that recycling should be standardised (different councils recycle different things) They all thought that greenhouse gas emissions was overstated and hyped up. Must admit I agree with everything they said. (8 men and 6 women took part) Rich

Not really a H&S topic but I believe Global Warming is being treated just like H&S by the media as a good kicking thing because it means that many businesses can get away with quite a lot of abuse if it is discredited by the media. The attack that is expected by the Government on H&S law is just one very worrying point and will be followed by an attack on Global Warming. When will people simply learn they are being led by the nose.

Well, they could read a lot more, then they'd realise there is nothing they could do. if we closed down all the power stations and scrapped all the vehicles powered by internal combustion the emissions by India and China would make up the loss in a few months. Then again, if they looked at the charts of world temperatures BEFORE they are "homogenised" they might be led to believe that global warming is not that real....

Why should individual citizens of emerging and developing economies not aspire for better lifestyles that the developed world has had for decades and also, their per capita CO2 emissions are far below the ones in the developed world. Not only that, but even today, the recycling rate and use of public transport in India is significantly greater than the developed countries. "Better lifestyles" does not mean all will use cars etc. Public transport is significantly used in India and there are huge infrastructure projects being undertaken to improve the urban public transport networks. e.g. from city of Ahmedabad in the state of Gujarat (with present population of 6.2 million which is likely to be 11 million by the year 2035) a Bus Rapid Transport System is an advanced stage of implementation and a metro rail project is being implemented. http://www.ahmedabadbrts.com/ http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ahmedabad_BRTS http://en.wikipedia.org/...andhinagar_and_Ahmedabad India indeed takes its international environmental obligations seriously and that is why it managed to get a special commercial deal from the USA & the nuclear suppliers group so that it can expand its civilian nuclear programme and use less of the fossil fuels in the long term ( obviously for the suppliers to make profit out of it-there is nothing like a free lunch!) When we in UK find it so difficult to get a consensus on some of the major infrastructure projects, remember that Inida is a very young "federal democracy" and the states of the Inidan Union have their own powers and jurisdiction, not to mention that India has had a coalition government since 1991, sometimes with very strange bedfellows--classic example was when in the Communist Party of India withdrew the support to the Congress Party led government when the law was being enacted to "operationalise" the civil nuclear deal with USA/Nuclear suppliers group. Yes, there are huge issues to be resolved, corruption can be rampant and there are millions below the poverty line, but somehow in all the chaos, it has managed to produce world class organisations, both in the private and public sector where they have been led effectively.

Global Warming is only one (contentious!) outcome from the irrefutable conclusion that our current population and activities (fed by rampant consumerism and economic machinations) on this planet are unsustainable. It is equally conceivable that we (most of us) will die of thirst or hunger before we die of heat exhaustion, solar radiation or atmospheric collapse. These emerging "sustainability" initiatives really get my goat.
