Are there any requirements / restrictions on when commercial waste can be collected, particularly if the business is in a residential area. A particular waste contractor (who shall remain nameless) collects waste from a chemist across the road from my house at 6am each Tuesday and they don't seam to mind how much noise they make.

There doesn't tend to be specific requirements on commercial waste being moved but you appear to have what is termed a 'noise nuisance'. Your Local Council is responsible for resolving these issues but best practice is for you to make the first contact with the noise producer. If you do not succeed then contact your Local Council Environmental Health Dept who will gladly help. For something to be classed as a noise nuisance several factors need to be taken into account and the first one is the time of day. Most planning permission on building sites have a clause preventing work before 7am so it looks as though you have a case. Keep a log of the specific times and the noise as this will be needed by the Council. Take care JohnC

I think John has it about right. In most cases the most appropriate way is to first make a non confrontational contact with the company that is making the noise and see if they are aware of the issue and if they can change the route and therefore the timing. You MAY find that there are planning restrictions on the chemist as well, regarding deliveries, vehicle movements etc. Softly, softly to start with and then if you can't find a mutual resolution contact the EH department of the local Council
