Hi,

I passed my NEBOSH certificate two years ago and I am sorry to say that at the time I did not persue a career in health and safety as a new management position came up with my current employer and due to personal reasons (husbands redundancy) it made sense to continue on that career path and not try to change my career at that time.

However I am now looking at trying to get into health and safety full time. I have been looking at the NEBOSH diploma but everyone tells me that unless I am working in a full time h & s role that this will be near on impossible to complete. Is this true?

Also if anyone could give me any advice as to how to kick start my career I would be grateful. I have experience of workplace inspections, completing risk assessments, sitting on a health and safety forum and facilities management, looking after three libraries.

Any advice would be appreciated. Thank you.

Sharon

Hi Sharon

I passed my NGC in 2004 did not go into health and safety and like you followed another career. Two years ago decided on taking the Diploma, for similar reasons, and had to do this the distance learning route, which is not an easy option. My only health and safety role was as the departments representative so not full time and very limited. I still passed the diploma and I've never studied at that level before, so if I can do it why can't you?

hope this helps

Hi

I passed my NEBOSH GC this year (with credit) and am currently doing my Professional Diploma in Safety, Health and Environmental Management. The reason for this is because after looking at the NEBOSH diploma, I didn't like what I was reading about failure rates, plus it is very very expensive, and like you, I wasn't in a H&S role so this avenue wouldn't have been open to me.
Sadly, this course will no longer be run after this year.

The market isn't good at the moment, but I would say, keep trying and keep your options open with regard to further study. You'll need to be mindful of the fact that if you do want to join the new register for Consultants, you'll have to achieve chartered status. In order to do this, you'd need to undertake a course at a higher level. Details of courses accredited at Graduate level, which will lead to chartered status are mentioned in the training section of the website. I just wanted to let you know about the withdrawal of Nottingham Trent's course.

Hi

Thank you to everyone for your replies. I apologise that I haven't been able to post for a while to thank you. Your advice has been much appreciated and I am inspired by those of you that have worked hard to get your diplomas.

I have been looking into the NVQ level 4 and the diploma and I feel at this time that it would be wise to gain a position in health and safety before I start any further study so that I have relevant experience.

So it's on with the job hunting in earnest and updating my c.v.

Thank you again
Sharon
