Is it possible to have 2 Principal Contractors on a project at the same time (same Client) Each carries out different phases of work but they do overlap.

Simple answer is NO if any of the work is linked with the work of another. Mind you many clients do try it Bob

Jay, I'm in agreement with Bob. Check out paragraph 154 & 155 of the ACoP. Link below. http://www.hse.gov.uk/pubns/priced/l144.pdf

Yes I agree with the other answers. CDM works around 'projects' rather than contracts or phases. For one project, at any one time, there can be only one (PC)! Basically, one of the contractors will have to act as PC while there is an overlap, and it would be sensible to decide which it is on the basis of which would be able to discharge the role most effectively during that period. The Client should write to both, ending one appointment at midnight and starting the appointment at one minute past midnight, just to keep things tidy. Also, contact the CDMC about resubmitting the F10 with updated information. Chris

B & F & C are correct noting that people like neat little packages hence the practice and the legal philosophy of 'proximity' comes in here You can have many money streams coming in from many areas with numerous and different players all at the same time [the regs allow for this] but the management system is 'one' abet one overall system that is tuned by each player as needed and managed by the PC [the PC can be changed to suit the job needs]noting that the regs only accommodate 1 PC at any one time It sounds complicated but I can assure you that it need not be; its just that the client needs to have a real interest to make things work and each CDMC needs to understand about management systems however to my experience most do not - This is where the Reg:7 person [providing that they know about management systems] should come in but alas the CDM regs do not highlight the post Whilst many blame accountants for the various problems I feel that when educated financiers can understand the situation and provided the money comes in that do not care where it comes from - the biggest difficulty is that financial systems are not [officially] very flexible - a similar situation exists for procurers

Thanks for confirming my thoughts Gents. The reason I asked the question is because a Project Manager I know recently told me his project has 2 PC's on one project and this has been given the approval by a SHE Manager (I must point out the Project Manager is also the CDM-C!!). I will ask for more information from him before taking it any further. Cheers for your help. J

Hi Jay, please look at the competency set for the CDM-c if your man doesn't fit the schedule then you need to inform the client immediately

Jay I am also a little concerned about the SHE manager - you might need to look at this also. Bob
