Hi all, Is it compulsory for all schools to have lightning conductors? I have been reading through some school fire risk assessments and some have mentioned the need for conductors and some have not. Many thanks, Paul.

Hi Paul, I think the answer will be in the building regs rather than in H+S or fire requirements.

BS6651: 1999 “Protection of Structures against Lightning” refers. Prevalence of lightning in the geographic area , as well as the height and relative isolation of the structure are also listed in the criteria. So the answer is: "it depends"!

If you have access to FPA documents - there is a leaflet RC35 Risk Control - Protection of Buildings Against Lightening Strike which might give you some more information but essentially it is as Ron says, it is based on risk assessment and "it depends"
