I have searched but cannot find a definitive ruling. For both a manual and powered pallet truck, what are the timescales for refresher training? Is it a requirement to retrain after a set period time other than a good practice guideline? The same I guess, applies to picking trucks, LLOP's or yaks ( depending on where you live means the same thing!)...any thoughts please?

forklift truck refresher training is every 3 years so would this not be a sensible time frame for pallet trucks and the like which are ultimately simpler to operate. Phil

We do refresher training for FLT drivers every 3-5 years.

Would refresher training be risk based? I presume this is regarding electrical or manual pedestrian type pallet trucks obviously have less hazards/risks associated than the ride on style picker trucks.

There isn't an absolute requirement to carry out FLT refreshers after either 3 or 5 years, however, it is good practice every 3 years.

You wont find any legislation regarding specific refresher training for Hand Operated Pallet trucks as such. Initially training would be required, however after this I would incorporate into your risk assessment on your judgement of when or if refresher training would be required, i.e. if the risks to which people are exposed change, perhaps new genaration of Pallet trucks come out in to your organization, if the system of work changes significantly (unlikely), new starters, people fooling around on them.

HSE claim 3-5 years for a refresher in their workplace transport section (apart from obviously if you deem the users incompetent...) hence the fact we go with that as a minimum, and would use the same for any manual or powered pallet trucks.
