Hi, Anyone got any knowledge of working in OZ? I am tinkering with the idea of a move next year, however unsure if my PGC in Safety and Risk would be recognised...It would seem that NEBOSH is not. Just info on HS quals would help, all other criteria has been investigated...

What is the status of IOSH over there, if any? I am Grad status at present and working towards Chartered.

Any help would be appreciated

Hi, I live and work here in Adelaide and only moved out here in April, at present I am employed as a Project/Safety Coordinator within cabinet making.
I am TechIOSH and hold NGC,Fire Cert and Env' Cert. Nebosh and IOSH mean nothing over here apart from the fact that you already have qualifications and experience, they will assist you to gain a diploma in H & S through a Recognition of Prior Learning scheme which is very similar to the NVQ system, I completed this last month and cost me in total $2000.

Your experience is the main factor and also getting a recognised Oz qualification would help also.

Auchie,

What is the current job situation like in Oz at present? Is there much requirement for H&S Managers/advisors? What industries are thriving at the moment?

Regards

The main job adverts are in The Advertiser on a saturday morning and more often than not you are spoiled for choice, there are alot of progressive industries here right now. The railways, mining, manufacturing and care homes are always advertising for H&S.

Obviously the mining pays the most then followed by rail work and the salaries are ranging from $150,000 to $60,000 p.a.

If you where to come out here as a CMIOSH you would have your pick of jobs I believe, especially with some high end technical knowledge such as oil, gas or rail work.

Anything else you think of just ask.

Hi Auchie,

Thanks for posting...

My experience is mainly Marine, however I am pretty well up on HSEQ system management and development - 14001 / 9001 / 18001...

Is there much of a demand for this type of work? Also, would my PGC be recognised or would it be best to gain something over there? Perhaps distance learning would be an option - can you recommend a training provider / Uni etc?

Cheers

Gary you would be doing yourself a favour looking at Perth and Adelaide as that is where most of the marine work in defence, have a look at www.ASC.com.au (ASC stands for australian submarine corporation), they have a huge place here in Adelaide.

I have just completed a Diploma in H&S with Business SA and obviously had to sit a 1 day legislative converstion course, although my employer had just started a certification course for AS:4801 so this speeded up myself gaining the diploma as fast as i did and also helped that the consultant he employed also assessed my quals and gave me a interview.

As you know that ultimate certification is to ISO and Oz standards are on the same path, maybe a lot less technical but they are more interested in the quality side here, then safety and lastly Env'.

Your PGC would sit well here, all quals do mean something its just that if you where a CMIOSH you would only be recognised by someone in the know as to what IOSH is or isnt.

Have you started the process of moving over.

I arrived here on the thursday, had an interview on the tue and another on the wed of the following week, got offered both jobs and started on the monday, I was unemployed for the previous 15 months in the west coast of scotland so being here is really good for the career also watching the dolphins and whales in there natural habitat is rather good also.

Hi Chris, I have been away hence delay on replying.

Thanks for the info mate, really helpful. Well done re new job, sounds as if you have hit the ground running...

I am coming over to Brisbane in a couple of weeks to meet a friend and possibly do a bit of scouting. Initially looking at Queensland for work but could really go anywhere. Is AS:4801 similar to 18001? I already manage a integrated HSEQ system certified to 18001/9001/14001 so something in systems management would be ideal. Also, did you find the leg conversion course useful? Could you provide details on this?

Any help appreciated - oh and how are you coping with the heat??

Cheers

Gary

I've been here almost 2 years, one of the things I did was to join the Safety Institute of Australia (SIA). They recognise my NEBOSH Diploma as the equivalent of an OSH Degree. My UK qualifications and IOSH membership level (CMIOSH) automatically qualified me for Chartered Professional Member of the SIA. Growth areas at the moment from my perspective are Rail, Construction and Mining.

I am lead to believe that the Perth oil and gas game offshore is booming - I have a number of mates over there at this time
Best of luck

Note that Occupational Health and Safety Managers are no longer on the latest ( schedule 3) Skilled Occupation Lists. Only way to gain a visa now is to get company sponsorship. Not sure how easy this is...

However I am just back from a trip to Brisbane and was stunned to see how many HSEQ related positions were advertised in local press etc. I also spoke with a major construction company who were quite angry at the removal of OHS.

Seems strange that OHS was removed when there is such an apparent shortage of people to fill these positions...

Back to the drawing board and back to the UK weather...
