The DTI website says the 1992 PPE regs were revoked in 2002 and amalgamated to form the PPE Regulations 2002 however HSE say the terminology for the regs is PPE Regulations 1992 as amended. Does anyone know what is the correct name for these regs and others amended at the same time? We're confused by conflicting info. Irene

Two separate things. The 1992 Regs relate to the use of PPE at work and are referred to as The Personal Protective Equipment at Work Regulations 1992 (as amended) The 2002 Regs relate to the sale and supply of PPE and are referred to as The Personal Protective Equipment Regulations 2002.

The BIS (the nth evolution of DTI!) website refers to the "supply" regs that apply to placing on the market of PPE http://www.bis.gov.uk/files/file11263.pdf The EC Directive 89/686/EEC was implemented into UK law by the Personal Protective Equipment (EC Directive) Regulations 1992 (SI 1992/3139) (the ‘Principal Regulations’). These Regulations were made on 10 December 1992 and came into effect on 1 January 1993. They have since been amended three times by the Personal Protective Equipment (EC Directive) (Amendment) Regulations 1993 (SI 1993/3074), the Personal Protective Equipment (EC Directive) (Amendment) Regulations 1994 (SI 1994/2326), and the Personal Protective Equipment (EC Directive) (Amendment) Regulations 1996 (SI 1996/3039). In 2002, the Principal Regulations and the three amendments were consolidated into one document in the interests of providing clearer legislation and at the same time additional enforcement powers were extended to the Trading Standards Departments. The consolidated regulations called the Personal Protective Equipment Regulations 2002 (SI 2002 No. 1144) came into effect on 15 May 2002. These Regulations revoke the Principal Regulations and subsequent three amendments. The Principal Regulations apply to personal protective equipment (PPE) placed on the UK market after 1 July 1992. The HSE website refers to the "use, i.e at work" regs that apply in the use of PPE and have a different title with reference to "work", i.e. Personal Protective Equipment at Work Regulations 1992 (as amended)

Forgive me if I am wrong but the PPE Regs are the 1992 Regs (As amended). The 2002 regs referred to are the Health and Safety (Miscellaneous) Regs 2002. Various othger regs that amended the PPE Regs 92 are listed inside the HSE's PPE Regs publication L25 (second edition), downloadable from HSE website. Clear as mud eh!

Chas, There are 2 types of PPE Regs. Personal Protective Equipment Regulations 2002 -for placing in the market-all to do with conformity, CE marking, meeting essential health and safety standards -enforced by Trading Standards. Personal Protective Equipment at Work Regulations 1992 (as amended) to do with use "at work" enforced by the HSE/LA
