Afternoon all. Our site is made up of external sheds (for factory part of site) and none of these are close to the electricity sub station on site. However, it appears that the powers that be want to build a new shed in the area next to the sub station (within five metres) Anyone shed any light on if there are any issues on how close welding can take place near a sub station? Obviously the shed will be enclosed. Or would it be best to ring the area electricity provider? Ta! Jonathan

Hally this mostly depends upon the type of welding taking place and the gases you are using (if you are), it would be prudent to involve your electricity provider, make them aware of your intentions and work out the best solution between you.

I wouldn't have thought there would be any issue unless you have something specific in mind but giving a call to the company that own the sub station wouldn't hurt and will put your mind at rest in nothing else. Phil

Hally, one thing we may be overlooking here is that the substation may be owned by your company, in this case providing you carry out your risk assessment and provide suitable access in case of emergency i believe there should be no other major concerns, i work in the fabrication industry and i can inform you that we weld within a couple of meters of substations & switchrooms, our electrical providers & HV maintenance company have never raised concerns during their inspections. Best of luck.
