Hi Steve

Only you can decide what's best for you, after passing my cert some time ago I decided to take the NVQ route.

My decision was based on what suited me and I felt the NVQ route fitted around my role, I had two young kids at the time and felt I could not switch off and get stuck in books and heavy revision. NVQ 4 was challenging but very rewarding as I felt I got a lot out of doing the portfolio and demonstrating my competence in the workplace.

Having said the above I have recently been awarded CMIOSH and started a new role as safety manager and my kids have grown up (I think they have!!) so maybe in a year or two I may consider the next step of progression, but I will sit down a really think what benefits I and the company I work for will get if I undertake diploma. I may consider going NVQ 5.

The point I would make to you is look where you are now and where you want to be, then decide what course would suit you and your employer hopefully that will help make the decision

Have you considered the Nottingham Trent University Diploma - there is and environment bolt-on which gives you associate membership with IEMA and if you progress to masters with NT you get an exemption from the Environment part of the course.

I did the NVQ 4 and whilst it was very rewarding I found it one dimensional (industry specific). Having said this, I did it years ago well before IOSH put in place the Open Book Assessments which now may address this.

Hi Steve, two years ago I had the same choice to make. I have done an NVQ before and did find that too onerous. But I did want the classroom teaching and the chance to create a few network colleagues for swapping studying work with. I opted for the BSC diploma because of the two exam two assignment arrangement, I felt that option suited me better. They also boasted of a learner support manager and he proved priceless along the way. The food at the Hammersmith is also legendary! I began in the classroom last July and took exams in Oct and Feb then submitted the assignments after that. I passed four weeks ago.

Be prepared to put in a lot of work outside of the classroom. You need to get family 'buy-in' for the duration. Make the most of networking and any learner support.

Good Luck!

Hi Steve, I was in your situation a couple of years ago, looked at the NVQ route but decided to go the Diploma route at S-O-T college. The course was excellently run with good support but I should add out of the 19 in the class that started out only a couple to my knowledge passed in the first year. The majority took 18 months to 2 years including myself and quite a number are still to complete it, but you are allowed up to five years. There was one lady on the course who had already completed NVQ level 4 and thought the diploma was the better of the two. As some replies have already stated, you will need those around you to 'buy in' because many hours of private study time are required especially at exam time.

If you do decide the diploma route pm me as I have numerous pieces of study and revision aids that I could send you.
