Any other safety guys from other construction companies that can advise as to what they do on PAT testing. The guidance given in HSG141 Electrical safety on construction sites, says that all 110 portable and hand held tools, extension leads, site lighting, movable wiring systems and associated switch gear, needs to be PAT tested every 3 months. I'm looking to find out what other construction company's do as this is proving to be a bit of a nightmare.

Steve

Steve You will find that all construction (main sites) will require electric portable equipment used on site to have a PAT test. What we have introduced is that our fitters carry out the tests and maintain a log, for all equipment that leaves the yard. You will find that most H&S site inspections will look at the equipment and if not current, it will be removed from site.

Ask the Brick layers to do the work they dont carry any kit. In Jest for any Bricklayers out there. It is a nightmare, especially for the site managers and foremen who are normally carrying out these checks. Fortunately I am part of a small company so we had an operative in house trained and are shortly going to purchase the equipement to carry out our own testing. I sympathise with the larger sites because the amount of electrical equipement I used to have in my van would have taken a week (exagerated) to check on it's own. The crunch comes when there are large numbers of sub contractors. I would be trying to get test certs prior to them attending site and carry out spot checks. If you work with regular contractors and subcontractors you may ask them to forward the details periodically. Steve is correct that a non tested item should be removed from site. I agree that this can prove difficult though.

Thanks for your help guys. We obviously do remove any item of kit that isn't PAT tested. We also have a large electrical contractor who has worked on our sites who told me they only carry out testing every 12 months. When I pointed out what the guidance said they maintained that they considered there was only a need to do it every 12 months. I also have a site manager who worked for one of the well known bigger construction company's who told me that they did not do it every 3 months. I was hoping someone would be able to tell me how best to manage it, so thanks for your ideas
