I have been asked to come up with a number of health and safety performance indicators as part of our health and safety monitoring process. We currently only use lagging indicators such as accident numbers, lost time etc.
I have a few ideas but wondered if any of my fellow professionals have any experience of good, simple leading performance indicators.
Thank you in anticipation

Hi Alan
Have you thought of measuring attendance levels for training sessions, numbers of training sessions, total of hours in safety and health training in a given time period (month/year).
You may also have targets for reviewing of risk assessments and SSOW so you could measure you performance against these criteria as well, or look at the percentage of your products/services that have been assessed for health & safety impacts. The numbers of safety inspections per month can also be used.
Minutes from H&S committee meetings can also be used, by looking at things such as the percentage of committee recommendations implemented and/or time taken to complete actions.
The numbers of solved/unsolved safety non-conformance's for the month or costs of solved safety non-conformance's solved for the month can also be used.
Just a few ideas to get you going, to be honest there is a plethora of data you can use, you just need to set some targets and then measure yourself against those targets.
Cheers
Steve
