Hi all,
Currently into my 2nd year of the certificate in education, as part of the course, we have to do a specialist conference paper at Huddesfield University in April of next year.
Now, we all love H & S, however not everyone does - I deliver the course primarily to the care sector and to be honest the learners aren't that bothered as they find it boring.
It is a difficult topic to teach, was thinking of doing my paper on "ways to make H & S interesting".
Anyone got any other ideas, or how I can approach the topic I've mentioned?
Also, does anyone know of specialist mags/journals I could use for my research?
Once again, thans for your help
chris

Hi
CD
An interesting topic I'm sure!
past experience is to ensure student participation, especially practical elements.
consider the question 'what's in it for me'? I have used this even in Africa etc where the objective is to spell out an individuals benefits and not just the company, group etc.
Also use of props to 'incapacitate' individuals to give them a personal perspective of how simple tasks become difficult when blind, fingers/hands cannot function etc to show the benefits of working in their own interests of safety?

Hi Chris, have you had the invite to the 'virtual exhibition / conference in early Dec? I can't find it in my e mails at the moment but there is a 16:00 session for 45 mins on how to make H&S training more interesting so that sounds like a good fit for you (unless you are that presenter looking for ideas).
Have a search for the above and I will check my e mails later and post a link if successful

As someone who has taught for the better part of twenty years I’m a little surprised by your comments of making H&S interesting.
Lots of things that you can do to make it relevant and interesting to the group’s you are lecturing to.
In simple terms, each candidate must find the course valid and relevant to them. Participation is a key element as is the promotion of a learnt skill.
Humour is also a factor; I use visual aids in the form of pictures I’ve taken over the years. Try and address the historical factor to address how our laws came about. I use a quiz for this by using laws that are still on the statute books but are clearly farcical.
Give them scenarios to work out in groups to make them compete against each other. Try not to lose people by quoting statues and regulations, in my view many people switch off.
Break each part of the teaching section to a unique section: oral presentation; quiz; test; round robin; visual aids; physical aids etc………..

Thanks for your comments however, I do all that already - it keeps their interest, but doesn't necessarily MAKE health & safety interesting? I primarily deliver courses to the care sector who do this topic every year, or more if they change jobs etc etc.
I am well aware of learner participation, 'buzz-groups' etc etc as that is what the Cert Ed is all about - engaging the learner.
What I am after is specialist journals on the subject as I have to write a paper on the topic and present to other teachers/tutors/trainers at Uni.

Well you can find lots of articles on google via “Scholarly articles for academic teaching and education”
I assume you have access to links like Athens for research on teaching.
I also believe that HSE did some work (some years ago) on teaching health and safety. I cannot remember if it was done at the Sheffield of Buxton offices, try calling them and speak to research and development.
