Morning - does any of your organisations apply a distance or time limit for over night stays away form the workplace. Examples - 100 miles or 2 hour drive?

One former company and one firm that I have both worked for previously both had such policies. The company I worked for had a 90mile limit before the individual could make the choice to book a hotel or not. The firm had a 100mile or 2hour limit before you could book a stay in a hotel.

We don't; we always expect people to use discretion but don't set a limit in case people really are very very tired or it is unreasonably late to expect them to drive home. On the whole people would rather get home, and we don't really get people booking stays away if they can possibly get home, John

Perhaps you should adopt a different approach and base your guidance on daily working hours rather than mileage. We generally say if you cannot get home by 21.00 hours you should book into a hotel. As our normal working hours start at 08.30 this gives a clear 11+ hours rest between shifts.

Yes, I think any policy must have pragmatic and sensible approach.

DP ROSPA did a lot of work on this subject a few years ago. This ROSPA doc will assist you with your policy and covers overnight stays http://www.rospa.com/roa...info/worksafejourney.pdf Steve

I work for myself and frequently stay overnight. I base my trips on roughly more than 150 miles driving with about 2+ hours on site. A trip to London for me is more than 200 miles and about 5 hours with one or two rest breaks - depending on traffic. Following a site visit I usually get to the hotel about 5 or 6 pm and write the report. Scotland similar. There is an odd occasion when I can visit 2 sites in a day but that then reduces the miles. I recently travelled 120 miles to site, 2 hours on site then a further 30 miles and 2 hours on site. I was knackered !!!!

Really depends on how long i need to stay in a depot. Based in Liverpool but have depots as far up as Aberdeen and as far down as Somerset and West Sussex. Did Bridgend last week, 5 hours there due to the delightful M6 and problems after the M50, 3 hours in the depot and over 4 hours back. I wasn't driving but normally i'd have done another depot the day before or after and stayed over. Done Motherwell a few times as a day trip, approx 3.5 hrs from here.
