Hello everyone, I hope you are all well.
I plan to start studying for my Diploma in Jan 2011. It is a distance learning course.
I would like to get it done in 1 year, is that over ambitious? I am single, no kids and currently work in H&S fulltime. I could get a few sneaky hours of study done while in work.
The recommended time is 18 months at 11 hours per week.
Has anyone completed the distance learning DipOSH in one year, please tell me how it worked for you – good and bad.
Thanks
Lorna

Hi Lorna - I've just completed the Diploma, and took 2 years to do it by distance learnign - that included a generous period of reading trhrough the material before I attempted an exam.
Your background will help - I'm married, and pretty much had to study in my own time. I would say I averaged about 1.5 hours per day throughout the 2 years.
It also depends on how you learn - you could take the exams over 3 consecutive days - if I had done it that way, I would have failed, so I took one, then studied until the nexty exam 6 months later, and so on.
Don't forget you also have the workplace assignment to factor in.

Hi Lorna
I completed the Diploma over one year through block release teaching, but a friend of mine done units A, B and C over the same period and is sumbmitting the assignment in March next year. It is achieveable, but only you will know how much time you can dedicate to it and whether your learning style is suited to distance learning. Discipline is the key, I gave up my social life to study for the three exams and then again with the assignment.
Depending on your course provider, there may be informal study groups you can join in for support, and there's always willing and able help on this and other forums.
Good luck, feel free to PM if you want more info.

Hi Lorna, I note that you say DipOSH which is the BSC variant of the NEBOSH diploma. I have just completed mine in about 18 months with five weeks in the classroom and including 3 months preparation before the first class week. Married and with a teenage son the schedule was July 2009 first week, Oct 2009 Unit 1 exam, Feb 2010 unit 2 exam, May (ish) Unit 2 assignment and Sept 2010 unit 3 assignment.
You need to get your head down and follow all of the advice given here but being single without children is going to help. Good luck.

Ah, well spotted M.
Lorna, apologies for mis-reading the qualification you're going to study but hopefully my advice was still of some use!

Hi Lorna, I am currently doing via supported distance learning which I found hard working fulltime. Exams are in Jan and July so depends if you thing doing 2 or 3 at a time is achievable. I started in Nov 2008 took Unit B in July 09, Unit C in July 10 and am doing resit of Unit A in Jan 11 as I failed in Jan 10. I will then submit Unit D.
I have struggled taking this route as I am single Dad of 11yr old girl so time is not in abundance and job does not allow me time to study at work. In hindsight I wish I had chosen another route, but with hindsight I would do many things differently.
I wish you all the best as it is worth the time in the end.
regards
Kevin
